25 And he said to them, “O foolish ones, and slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken! 26 (A)Was it not necessary that (B)the Christ should suffer these things and enter into (C)his glory?” 27 And (D)beginning with (E)Moses and (F)all the Prophets, he interpreted to them in all the Scriptures the things concerning himself.

28 So they drew near to the village to which they were going. (G)He acted as if he were going farther, 29 but they urged him strongly, saying, “Stay with us, for it is toward evening and (H)the day is now far spent.” So he went in to stay with them. 30 When he was at table with them, he took the bread and (I)blessed and broke it and gave it to them. 31 (J)And their eyes were opened, and they recognized him. And (K)he vanished from their sight. 32 They said to each other, (L)“Did not our hearts burn within us while he talked to us on the road, while he (M)opened to us the Scriptures?” 33 And they rose that same hour and returned to Jerusalem. And they (N)found the eleven and (O)those who were with them gathered together, 34 saying, “The Lord has risen indeed, and (P)has appeared to Simon!” 35 Then they told what had happened on the road, and (Q)how he was known to them in (R)the breaking of the bread.

Jesus Appears to His Disciples

36 As they were talking about these things, (S)Jesus himself stood among them, and said to them, “Peace to you!” 37 But they were (T)startled and (U)frightened and (V)thought they saw a spirit. 38 And he said to them, “Why are you troubled, and why do doubts arise in your hearts? 39 See my hands and my feet, that it is I myself. (W)Touch me, and see. For a spirit does not have flesh and bones as you see that I have.” 40 And when he had said this, (X)he showed them his hands and his feet. 41 And while they still disbelieved (Y)for joy and were marveling, (Z)he said to them, “Have you anything here to eat?” 42 They gave him a piece of broiled fish,[a] 43 and he took it and ate before them.

44 Then he said to them, (AA)“These are my words that I spoke to you while I was still with you, (AB)that everything written about me in the Law of Moses and the Prophets and the Psalms must be fulfilled.” 45 Then (AC)he opened their minds to understand the Scriptures, 46 and said to them, “Thus (AD)it is written, (AE)that the Christ should suffer and on the third day (AF)rise from the dead, 47 and that (AG)repentance for[b] the forgiveness of sins should be proclaimed (AH)in his name (AI)to all nations, (AJ)beginning from Jerusalem. 48 (AK)You are witnesses of these things.

Born Again to a Living Hope

(A)Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! (B)According to his great mercy, (C)he has caused us to be born again to a living hope (D)through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, to (E)an inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled, and (F)unfading, (G)kept in heaven for you, who by God's power are being guarded (H)through faith for a salvation (I)ready to be revealed in the last time. In this you rejoice, though now for a little while, if necessary, you have been grieved by (J)various trials, so that (K)the tested genuineness of your faith—more precious than gold that perishes (L)though it is tested by (M)fire—may be found to result in (N)praise and glory and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ. (O)Though you have not seen him, you love him. (P)Though you do not now see him, you believe in him and rejoice with joy that is inexpressible and filled with glory, obtaining (Q)the outcome of your faith, the salvation of your souls.

10 Concerning this salvation, (R)the prophets who prophesied about the grace that was to be yours searched and inquired carefully, 11 inquiring (S)what person or time[a] (T)the Spirit of Christ in them was indicating (U)when he predicted (V)the sufferings of Christ and the subsequent glories.
